We don’t just want to help people find the perfect home in or around Edinburgh. We also want to ensure that your move is as seamless and stress-free as possible. That includes providing you with advice on moving your utilities. Take your broadband supply, for instance!
There was a time when a home broadband connection was considered a luxury. Today, however, it’s a necessity for most households. In an era where many of us are working from home, and reliant on streaming services for our entertainment, we need a fast and reliable connection to the internet about as much as we need running water.
When you move to a new home, there’s potential for a lot to go wrong. You could be lumbered with huge costs or find yourself waiting weeks to get connected. Here’s how to get it right.
As the experts at Broadband Plans suggest, if you’re happy with your current provider you may be better off moving broadband to your new home. In many cases, broadband providers will be amenable to moving your broadband supply to your new property. Indeed, this may be the fastest and most seamless way to move your broadband package to your new home. You may even see this as the perfect time to upgrade to a faster package or a service with more TV channels or call packages.
The only time when you will not be able to do this is if your current provider does not have coverage in the area where you’ll be moving to. For instance, if you currently have a Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) connection and move to an area where this is not available, you may have to choose a new provider if your current provider exclusively offers FTTP.
One of the first things you should do is check the terms of your current contract with your existing broadband supplier. If you are able to move your current plan to your new home, but don’t, you may incur early exit fees. Most providers charge a fee (usually around £10) for every month remaining on your contract. So if you still have 12 months left on your contract, that could be a very expensive move.
If you’re moving to a new property where you won’t be able to move your current plan because of the lack of cabling infrastructure (e.g. no fibre available, or no FTTP connections) your provider may waive any early exit fees.
It’s important to note that the broadband infrastructure in your new home may not be the same as in your current property. As such, broadband speeds may differ between your new and current properties. The communications watchdog Ofcom has a broadband speed checker that you can use to see the fastest speeds available in your new area. You can click here to use it.
If you can do so without incurring exit fees, you may want to look into a new broadband plan and provider for your new home. But with so many to choose from, how do you know which is the best deal for you?
Some things that you should factor in when making your decision include:
Remember that the cheapest provider may not necessarily be the best for your needs!
